The Caplan house was perfect for our small family holiday. The view was beautiful and the common areas of the house were large and cozy. The ravens visited us every day and we gave them treats! We really enjoyed our stay at Caplan house. The hillside location was perfect with a hiking trail nearby and a short few minute drive to the beach. If you're looking for something fancy this is not the place for you, but if you want a quiet retreat where you can sit by the fire or read a book at the bench window seat, this is the place for you. Just a few minor issues with kitchenware, but overall really enjoyed our stay. We will definitely stay here again.

I have stayed at 5+ houses in SeaRanch & I like the Caplan house best. It seems to be the most affordable for a 3 bedroom 2 bath house. They have a fully stocked kitchen, nice comfortable furniture and the hot tub, can't be beat!
I also like the upstairs bedroom with its own bathroom and balcony, looking to the views of the ocean. They have even replaced the decking & it looks great.
I will be back again!

When I plan a visit Sea Ranch, the first thing on my list is to see if Caplan is available. And I often base my timing on it.

This is a great house. The kitchen and master (downstairs) bathroom are a bit quirky but really/truly this is a very comfortable house, that is in a excellent location, and it just exudes serenity.

Caplan isn’t the fanciest house, or the most luxuriously appointed on at Sea Ranch. So if you need those things you might want to consider other options. But if you want a house with a great fireplace, a comfy couch, a stellar view, AND a decent collection of disco LPs (yes... there’s even some vinyl) then Caplan is a great choice.

Like I stated in my review from 2011, we always enjoy our stay at the Caplan House. This house has a private-feeling like many of the forest homes, but with a gorgeous ocean view. We never see another soul when out on the deck or looking out the windows. Like others have stated, this house could use a better stove. Two burners is a challenge for anyone cooking a meal.
And beware of the raccoons. I don't know what could be done about them but they are living under the deck near the hot tub, and have become increasingly and alarmingly bold. They will steal food off of the table on the deck, and will walk right into the house if you leave a door open.
Despite these things, we will return to the Caplan House. It is our favorite at Sea Ranch.

We usually stay in houses closer to the bluff so this was a real change. The setting is absolutely lovely -- lots of trees but with a spectacular view. We spent most of our waking hours on the deck which is spacious, private and sunny. The real wood fireplace is a plus and the kitchen is well equipped. Not fancy but quite sufficient. Overall a wonderful place -- we'll definitely return.

Our family of four loved our stay at the Caplan. The house was large, open and airy, and perfect for a family. We had a unique view of the ocean down a narrow valley, and were surrounded by trees on three sides - privacy was perfect. The kitchen was fully functional and we "cooked in" several times. Furniture was well appointed,and the sound system very good. There are four small tvs, and we were able to hook up a Playstation 3 to the two flat screens. We had a great time and plan to return to this house.

We were very satisfied with the size and condition of property, however question how well the furnace worked as it seemed as though the fan did not blow warmer air most of the time we turned it on. Kitchen very well equipped. Recommend renters bring their own storage containers for leftovers. Would benefit by having additional lighting for those who like to read in the evenings. Comfortable beds, nice view. Would recommend for a two couples or family.

Caplan had more of a view of the ocean than we were expecting from the site's photos. Our first time (of four) staying east of Highway 1. Though we missed the sound of the ocean, the view over Sea Ranch and out over the ocean made up for it. Though still not cheap, this hillside home offered tremendous value. We would certainly stay there again.

Just two small nits to pick:
1. The kitchen was well-stocked. The only complaint was that many of the dishes, glasses and cookware had to be cleaned before using. (A consequence of allowing self-cleaning at the end of one's stay?)
2. Having to bring our own linens (a first) was a minor irritant. I'm guessing many guests prefer that?

We always so enjoy our stays at the peaceful and well appointed Caplan House. Alongside of the spectacular sea front "Autumn Mist," the Caplan House is our favorite amongst all of the Sea Ranch homes we have rented for a summer retreat. It is so very private
and peaceful. The view from the large and generous deck (the best we have ever experienced at Sea Ranch) over the valley and onto the ocean beyond, and "sheltered" on the sides by forest trees, is nothing short of spectacular. Interior is most comfortably
and tastefully furnished, particularly the "great room" with its high ceiling and large stone fireplace. The new hot tub with its strong jets and very fun illumination system is top notch and was a much appreciated upgrade! And as always we so enjoyed visits
by a wide variety of local birds -- 2 types of blue birds, a family of adorable quails, the tiny finches, and once in a while either partriges or pheasants, and of course the next door family of wild turkeys. As well as watching turkey vultures and hawks sweep
the wide sky above the valley. The kitchen remains so well equipped (even with a waffle iron!) to prepare a steady stream of ambitious marvelous meals. A stay at Caplan House is guaranteed to provide a peaceful relaxing vacation .. a perfect place to decompress
from urban stress. Only criticisms are difficulty in operating most of the sliding glass and/or screen doors (particularly in the first floor twin bed room) -- needing a cleansing of accumulated needles or an oiling. And also beware a next of alarmingly bold
raccoons living beneath the deck hot tub. Those minor quibbles aside, I would highly recommend the Caplan House to anyone!

Though the Caplan house is dated and needs significant restoration, the location and ocean views were very nice.
We found the house to be quite dirty in places. Some kitchenware was unwashed, there was a lot of dust in the house, and many windows could use a good cleaning. The carpets are very worn and the furniture old.
However, the Caplan House was comfortable, quiet, and the ocean views were wonderful. We enjoyed our stay.

I would definitely return to Caplan - the view is great, the open layout of the house is nice, and it has a nice big deck. Would love to see the owners replace the stove, though. We love to cook while at Sea Ranch, and with a 2 burner stove, it's very difficult.

This was my second visit to the Sea Ranch. The area is so peaceful and quiet. The first time my rental was on the ocean side of Hwy 1. I prefer the walking paths on the ocean side as compared to the hillside area. I will return, hopefully sooner than later.

The Caplan house is lovely and very well appointed for a rental. Great kitchen pots & pans as well as good knives and everything you need for baking. We were very happy that we could take a hot tub each night and enjoy the stars. Our only disappointment was that there was no sun on the deck at all during our stay. I guess that the pictures on the website were taken in the summer, not the winter.

This is an older home at a great view location on The Sea Ranch. Some of the siding and decking is due for repair / replacement but that did not detract from our stay. The house has a tv that could be larger given the spacious room it occupies and audio equipment (even an LP turntable!) The home is clean and well equipped and everything that needed to work did. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the house to others.

Nice big house with three bedrooms and two have views of the coast. Great hot tub with lights, good internet and stereo (but bring your own cd's unless you like Frank Sinatra, Barbara Strisand and Nat King Cole(great old lp records), Need to drive to get to the coast walks since the house is East of Highway One. Good House for Family Get-togethers or two couples with a couple of kids.

The cookware in the kitchen was so cheap and worn out we couldn't cook with it. We ended up eating out instead of using the kitchen, which was a disappointment. The furniture was also dirty. Other than that, we liked the house. However, we would not stay there again since we did not feel that the amenities were up to par.
